Scientist, Cellular Biology & Immunology

Position Summary

We are seeking an innovative Scientist to join our team developing novel vaccine and cellular immunotherapies for treatment of cancer.  Genocea’s foundational technology, the ATLAS™ platform, is a high-throughput autologous cell assay that discovers tumor-specific T cell neoantigens thought to be important in controlling a patient’s disease.  ATLAS™ results are used to select validated neoantigens for patient-specific vaccines, population-based screening to identify antigens for inclusion in a common vaccine and for in vitro T cell expansion for adoptive immunotherapy. 

The successful candidate will advance Genocea’s approach to adoptive T cell therapy with clinical application in immuno-oncology, help advance the next generation of ATLAS screening and drive exploratory immunology projects.  The Scientist will design, develop, execute and analyze experiments to optimize processes for T cell expansion, and ATLAS screening and immunological cell-based assays.  The position is lab-based and will work in collaboration with other teams.  Activities stemming from early stage process development to later stage interactions with CMOs for technical transfer will be included in this role.  The Scientist will have the ability to independently troubleshoot technical issues and develop optimized processes and assays for critical tasks.  The successful candidate will have a strong background in immunology and T cell biology.  The scientist will have demonstrated hands-on experience with cell culture and immunological assays, such as ICS, ELISPOT, cell sorting, immunophenotyping and flow cytometry.  The candidate will have demonstrated leadership and managerial experience of a successful team.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Scientific leadership of a team of scientists and research associates to execute on goals of advancing ATLAS, adoptive T cell therapy and immunological cell-based assays

  • Drive innovative immunology and cell biology research

  • Develop method for isolation and expansion of human T cells including immune cell enrichment, T cell culture, APC differentiation and maturation and cryopreservation

  • Develop, optimize and qualify immunological and analytical methods to support process development such as ICS, proliferation, ELISA, cytotoxicity and multi-color flow cytometry assays

  • Develop and optimize assays to support exploratory clinical biomarker discovery

  • Design and perform DOE experiments to further characterize and optimize cellular expansion

  • Interact with CRO/CMOs for method transfer, technical advice and review of reports and data

  • Follow new developments and technologies in the field of immuno-oncology.

  • Key member of the research and cross-functional program teams, contributing to strategy with senior management

Required Skills

  • Expertise and hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture with specific experience culturing primary T lymphocytes is a requirement

  • Strong background in T cell biology and immunology is required, with background in oncology a plus

  • Demonstrated experience with immunological assays to assess and characterize T cell function such as cytokine secretion, cytotoxicity and proliferation

  • Experience with multi-color flow cytometry and flow data analysis is required, cell sorting experience a plus

  • Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Excel, Flow cytometry data analysis software, and Graphpad Prism are essential

  • Demonstrated scientific leadership experience including leading cross-functional teams and execution of projects on time

  • Experience with molecular profiling and TCR sequencing is a plus

Education & Experience Required

  • PhD in cellular biology/immunology with a minimum of 2 years related biopharmaceutical  industry experience
